About Mel
Welcome, I’m so glad you’ve found your way here,
I am a stylist and owner of Trends Salon and its sister company The Suites. I’ve developed a special expertise in curly and textured hair. I help people embrace and celebrate the beauty of their curls, and I’ve built my craft around honoring the uniqueness of every individual who sits in my chair. Rooted in the Cedar Valley, my work has also drawn guests from neighboring states who seek specialized care for their curls.

I’m committed to continuous growth, investing each year in advanced training — from mastering curly cutting techniques to elevating guest care and refining business practices. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, a foundation that allows me to blend artistry with strategy. This combination shapes everything I do: creating exceptional guest experiences, mentoring fellow professionals, and leading my two salons. One of my greatest joys is guiding my team of stylists toward their own goals, whether that means deepening their craft or preparing to open salons of their own.

What sets my approach apart is not only a deep understanding of curl types and care but also an unwavering commitment to building genuine connections. As a person of color, I know firsthand how powerful it is to be seen, heard, and celebrated. In my salon, every curl, every background, and every story matters.

Beyond the salon, I feel a deep connection to my community. You’ll often find me cheering on my sons at baseball or hockey, immersed in a good book, or volunteering. I serve on the Black Hawk County Gaming board and with the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, where I connect with diffenent groups and support local initiatives. These commitments reflect the same values I bring to my work: inclusivity, growth, and empowerment.

My husband and I are proud to raise our two boys here in the Cedar Valley, surrounded by a close-knit community we deeply value.
I’d be honored to help you discover and celebrate your unique texture. You can book a consultation or email me with any questions — I’m here to guide and support you every step of the way.
